Behaviour in the reading rooms

The facilities of the University Library are open to the public. The reading rooms are open to all interested non-university members as well as university members.

The relationship between users and the library is governed the General Library Regulations of the Bavarian Public Libraries, and, based on this, is specified in the Library Regulations of Passau University Library.

These aids are permitted for transporting books and work materials to the reading rooms:

  • Transparent plastic bags that clearly show the contents. These can be purchased from the copy centre (copy shop on the ground floor of the WIWI building), for example.
  • Sturdy, transparent bags (so-called BibBags), which are available from the Pustet bookshop, for example.
  • Laptop sleeves (not laptop bags).
  • Containers that do not allow the contents to be recognised, such as backpacks, school bags, laptop bags, opaque plastic bags, paper or cloth bags, are not permitted. These can be safely stored in the lockers.

What is allowed in the reading room?

  • Firmly sealable containers
  • Non-alcoholic drinks
  • also opaque containers

What should you leave outside?

  • Coffee-to-go cups
  • Open containers, e.g. cans, cups, glasses, mugs, etc.
  • Thermos flasks

Taking food into the reading rooms and eating it is generally not permitted. Snacks may only be consumed on site in the Library Lounge. You may bring your own food into the foyer of the central library.

In most areas of the reading rooms, a quiet rule applies in order to enable concentrated learning. Mobile phones may therefore only be used in silent mode.

Areas where conversations are permitted:

  • Study room in the central library, ground floor
  • Library Lounge in the central library, upper floor
  • ‘Mobile phone zone’ in the central library (corridor between scanbox and book tower), upper floor
  • Group study rooms in the IM reading room and in the Juridicum reading room

The reading rooms are very busy during the examination period. To ensure that as many people as possible can find a desks during this time and to avoid permanent reservations, desk reservation discs (or 'Pausenscheiben' in German) are available in the entrance areas of the reading rooms.

This is how it works:

  • When you leave your workstation – for a break, to search for literature, to make copies, etc. – you set the current time on the break disc.
  • The desks are then reserved for 60 minutes.
  • Desks without a reservation disc or with an expired break time may be reoccupied.

Please return the reservation disc to the collection point after use.
