Break discs for fair seat reservation

To ensure that as many people as possible can find a place to work even when the reading rooms are very busy, break discs are available in the entrance areas of the reading rooms.
These can be used to reserve a place for up to 60 minutes.
Places without a break disc or with an expired break time may be occupied by others. You can find detailed information on how to use the break discs on our website.

Looking for group study rooms?

In order to create space for social learning, there are several areas in the Central Library where conversation is expressly permitted. The computer science/mathematics and law reading rooms also each have a group study room. These are available to students upon prior reservation. Service Restrictions for the Passau Search Portal on 12 January

On Monday, 12 January, starting at around 12:00 noon, there may be service restrictions and brief connection interruptions affecting the Passau Search Portal.
Reason: The portal is hosted at the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre (LRZ) in Garching, where maintenance work has been scheduled.

University Library: Extended opening hours during the examination period

From 7 January 2026, the University Library will extend its opening hours: the Central Library will be open two hours longer, until 10 p.m., from Monday to Friday. At weekends, in addition to the Central Library and the Juridicum reading room, the Economics reading room will also be accessible. Details of opening hours.

16 December: Nikolakloster reading room closes at 6 p.m.

Due to the university staff Christmas gathering, the Nikolakloster reading room will close at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, 16 December. If needed, please use one of the other reading rooms.

Reading material for the festive season

In addition to academic literature, the University Library also stocks recent works of fiction. A small part of this can be found in the Library Lounge in the Central Library, where you are welcome to browse the shelves and borrow what you like.

Most contemporary novels, especially those written in foreign languages, are stored in the library stacks and can be ordered via the Passau Search Portal. To make your search easier, we have put together a selection of current novels in various languages, which can be accessed via the link.

Closure and extended reading room lending hours – Special opening of the Juridicum reading room

From 7 January, the University Library will open as usual and all reading rooms and services will be available again. As an exception to this, the Juridicum reading room will already be open in reduced form from 2 to 5 January. Details of the opening hours can be found here.

Media orders via the Passau search portal can be placed until Wednesday, 17 December, and can be picked up until Monday, 22 December. Research, external access to e-media and self-service functions such as account viewing, renewals, and reservations will be available without restriction throughout the period of closure.

The University Library offers extended borrowing of reading room holdings to students and non-university members over Christmas and New Year. Reading room books borrowed from Tuesday, 2 December onwards will be recorded with a return date after 6 January 2026. Please check your borrowing account for the respective return date.

However, please note that you still have to return media borrowed from the closed stacks or via interlibrary loan on time or renew them in your library account.

Library tour for international students

Take a guided tour of the Central Library specifically for international students to learn how the library works, what resources are available and tips for successful learning and research. This will be followed by an open question-and-answer session where you can ask all about borrowing, e-media and making the most of your library.

26 and 27 November: Limited heating in three reading rooms

On Wednesday, 26 November 2025, the Central Library, the Economics Reading Room, and the Nikolakloster Reading Room can only be supplied with limited heating. Significantly reduced room temperatures as well as restrictions on hot water supply are to be expected. Please note that it may take until Thursday afternoon for room temperatures to return to normal.

Where possible, we recommend using the Juridicum and Computer Science/Mathematics reading rooms, which will not be affected by the district heating interruption. If you still wish to visit the reading rooms mentioned above, please dress warmly. You are also welcome to bring blankets and thermos flasks.
