Elevated temperatures in exam venues – Current measures and guidance

Affected exam venues
The heat is most noticeable in the following spaces:

Triple-court sports hall and multi-purpose hall (Sports Centre)
Room NK 412 (Nikolakloster Building)
Innsteg Auditorium

Why relocation is not possible
The capacity of air-conditioned rooms on campus is limited. Due to the large number of exam candidates, it is not feasible to move examinations to cooler venues. Unfortunately, we are also unable reschedule or move examinations at this short notice, as this would create clashes with the state examination for the Teacher Education Programme.

Measures we are taking
The following measures are being implemented to reduce the heat load:

Windows are opened from 21:00 each night.
From 6:30, doors are also opened to allow cooler morning air to ventilate the venues.
Once outdoor temperatures match indoor temperatures (typically in the mid-to-late morning), windows are closed and external blinds lowered to prevent further solar heating.
Invigilators are recording room temperatures at the start and end of each examination. To this end, portable temperature monitors have been placed in the affected venues.

Tips for exam candidates

Cooling packs: Cooling packs are permitted in the exams under the given circumstances. For effective cooling, it is recommended that you temporarily place one on your wrist or the nape of your neck, where major blood vessels run close to the skin. This can help support circulation and reduce core body temperature.
Stay hydrated: Make sure you drink enough fluids – ideally chilled, but not ice-cold. You are permitted to bring beverages into the exam venue.
Wear light clothing: We recommend wearing clothing that is light and airy.

Libraries
Our libraries are currently being cooled. However, due to the high cooling load, combined with the amount of cooling capacity used, a slight rise in temperature may occur in the afternoons. Based on current readings, the room temperatures are expected to remain below 30°C.

We recognise that this situation is far from ideal and wish to assure you that we are taking every possible measure at our disposal to support you during this period.

From 16 August: reduced opening hours - Library will be closed on Assumption Day (15 August)

During the lecture-free period, the University Library will be reducing the opening hours of its reading rooms from Saturday 16 August until 11 October 2026. Please note that the Central Library will then close at 8 pm from Monday to Friday. At weekends, the Central Library and the Juridicum Reading Room will remain open from 10 am to 6 pm.

On Assumption Day, Saturday 15 August 2026, all University Library facilities will be closed.

‘Long Night of Learning’ of the WiWi student council on 2 July 2026

The Economics reading room will remain open until 01:00 for this event.

Travel literature in the Library Lounge

As a "library within a library", the Library Lounge offers a selection of current and popular literature.
For inspiration and planning for the upcoming holiday and holiday season, please refer to the selection of travel guides and reports there.
All university members and external users can take these out on site and check them out at the Central Library's circulation desk.

University Library: Extended opening hours during the exam period

From 29 June to 14 August 2026, the University Library will extend its opening hours: the Main Library will be open two hours longer, until midnight, from Monday to Friday. In addition, during the aforementioned period, the Nikolakloster and Economics reading rooms will be open at weekends, alongside the Main Library and the Juridicum reading room. Break discs for fair seat reservation

To ensure that as many people as possible can find a place to work even when the reading rooms are very busy, break discs are available in the entrance areas of the reading rooms.
These can be used to reserve a place for up to 60 minutes.
Places without a break disc or with an expired break time may be occupied by others. You can find detailed information on how to use the break discs on our website.
