Search databases, read e-journals & e-books at home
Log in to the University's EZproxy server using your University computer network credentials (the same username and password you use for Stud.IP or Groupwise).
After logging in, you will be taken to the University Library's web pages. From there, you can search InfoGuide, DBIS, the Electronic Journals Library or the Library web pages themselves for e-books, databases and e-journals.
Until you close your browser window, all websites visited will see you as belonging to the University of Passau, giving you access to (almost all) licensed electronic publications – as if you were physically on campus.
(Please note that Beck-online and beck e-Bibliothek cannot be accessed off-campus).
Frequently asked questions
Why 'off-campus access'?
If you are using your computer from home, while travelling or while on staff or student exchange at a partner university, the off-campus access interface allows you to access publications licensed to the University computer network. This includes the databases in the Database Information System (DBIS), the e-books available through InfoGuide and the electronic journals marked with a 'yellow traffic lights' icon in the Electronic Journals Library.
Due to licensing restrictions, Beck-online and beck-eBibliothek cannot be accessed via the off-campus access interface!
Browser settings or third-party software?
The off-campus access interface is web-based; you do not need to modify your browser settings, install plug-ins or special client software (such as VPN or Tunnelblick) to log in while away from the campus.
Who is eligible to use the off-campus access interface?
All staff and enrolled students of the University of Passau may use off-campus access.
How do I log in via the off-campus access interface?
Click on the login link at the top of the page. The username and password is the same as for Stud.IP or Groupwise.
Residents of Passau and the surrounding area are issued library cards on request, but do not receive a University network account. The library card number is not sufficient to use the off-campus access interface. Residents can only search the databases, e-books and e-journals while at the search stations in the Central Library and the reading rooms.
After you log in
Once you have completed login to the University's EZproxy server, you will receive a so-called 'cookie' on your computer. This has a session duration of two hours. During that time, your computer will be recognised as a University computer with a University IP address, and therefore as an authorised user. This gives you access to databases, fulltext articles and e-books.
However, if you type a web address into the browser's URL bar or attempt to view a page that is not located on the servers of licensed content providers, your EZproxy server access will lapse.
If you wish to return to the EZproxy server, simply click on one of the links on the off-campus access interface page or use the back button on your browser.
How can I tell whether I am logged in?
Some browsers display 'https://docweb.rz.uni-passau.de' in the URL field – this is the EZproxy address. If your browser does not, you can also read your IP address from the status line of the Electronic Journals Library. The EZproxy address of the University is 184.108.40.206.
Off-campus access is active in the browser window in which you logged in, as well as any windows opened from this window. In all other browser windows you will still be surfing from the IP address assigned by your ISP.
How do I log off?
Simply close the browser window or click on Logout. If you do not log off manually, the cookie session expires automatically after two hours.
What prerequisites should my browser fulfil so that I can use the off-campus access interface?

Problems with your firewall
The message 'This page cannot be displayed' suggests that there is a problem with your firewall. This is often the case in company networks, where firewalls prohibit access to external servers such as the EZproxy server of the University of Passau. The firewall must allow access to 'docweb.rz.uni-passau.de' (or 220.127.116.11) ports 2048 and higher. Please contact your local system administrator.
I do not have fulltext access, even though I should
It is possible that you are trying to access a database, e-journal or e-book site for which off-campus access has not been set up yet. Another possibility is that the content provider has changed URL. Or their servers may be temporarily unreachable.

Observe the licence conditions
Even when using off-campus access, we ask that you strictly observe the conditions of the licence and applicable copyright laws. The following is true in principle:
Only staff and students of the University of Passau may use the off-campus access interface. You are allowed to print out fulltext and search results are provided only for your personal use and for teaching and research. You are not permitted to systematically download fulltext or search results, or to provide them to others in electronic form or hardcopy.
