Log in to the University's EZproxy server using your University computer network credentials (the same username and password you use for Stud.IP or Groupwise).
The Beck-online database and the Beck-e-library are excluded from external access via EZProxy login. But both Beck databases can be used by students at the University of Passau using 2-factor authentication.
For students and other users with a library user card:
You cannot log in using the library user number 064...! This user group can only use the electronic resources licensed for the University computer network at the research stations in the reading rooms.
How do I know whether I'm logged in?
You are logged in if the URL in your browser's address field starts with 'https://docweb.rz.uni-passau.de'
The IP address of your device is 126.96.36.199 – if you visit a website that is registered as a possible destination address.
You can check the IP address of your device on the Electronic Journals Library website. The IP address is shown in the footer.
You will leave 'external access' if you try to access a website that is not entered as a possible destination address. To get back, simply call up the external access start screen again or click on the back button of your browser.

Only staff and students of the University of Passau are permitted to access these resources. Full text articles and search results may only be printed and saved for personal use or for teaching or research purposes. Systematically downloading full-text articles or search results is prohibited. You must not pass these resources on to third parties, regardless of whether they are printed or in electronic form.
Create an EZProxy direct link if you want to be able to access an e-book, e-book chapter or e-journal article directly even outside the University computer network, e.g. for an electronic reserve collection.
Make sure to use a permalink, not a dynamic URL! For entire e-books, the links provided by InfoGuide are well-suited for this purpose. Right-click on the 'Full text/Info access' button and click on 'Copy link address'. If you wish to create a link that goes straight to a specific e-book chapter or e-journal article, you have to find the permalink from the details page of the relevant provider (e.g. Springer).

After entering your ZIM username and password, you will be taken straight to the desired resource. If you are already logged in to the University computer network, the ZIM login screen is skipped and the link will take you directly to the e-resource.
What is 'External Access' for?
If you are at home or travelling and are staying at another institution, you can use it to access media licensed by the University Library for the University computer network. These include the databases in the Database Information System (DBIS), the e-books that can be accessed in the InfoGuide, and the electronic journals that are marked with a 'yellow traffic light' icon in the Electronic Journals Library (EZB).
Is it necessary to change the browser settings or install additional software?
As external access is web-based, you do not need any special browser settings, plug-ins or client software (such as VPN or Tunnelblick).
Is a VPN connection necessary?
No, a VPN connection is not required for registration via external access!
Who can use external access?
All enrolled students and staff of the University of Passau with a ZIM username.
How do I register for External Access?
Use the login link on the homepage of the library website or at the top of this page. Use your ZIM username and password (as you do for Stud.IP) to log on. The entered password will never be transmitted to the provider of the electronic resource. The password is checked exclusively on computers of the University of Passau.
School pupils and residents of Passau and the surrounding area are eligible for a library card, but do not receive a ZIM username. You cannot use external access with just the library number. School pupils and other users Passau and the surrounding area can use the databases, e-books and e-journals only at the search stations in the central library and in the reading rooms.
What happens after I log on?
Once you are logged in on the server EZProxy of the University of Passau, a cookie is stored on your computer and remains valid for two hours. During this time your computer will access the website of the providers of licensed media with an IP address from the University of Passau and is therefore recognised as an authorised user. This gives you access to databases, full-text articles and e-books.
If you type a URL directly into the address bar or go to a page that is not on the servers of licensed media providers, you will leave the EZProxy server area.

How do I know whether I'm logged in?
Some browsers show the EZproxy address 'http://docweb.rz.uni-passau.de' in the input line. Alternatively, you can see your IP address in the status bar of the Electronic Journals Library. The IP address of the EZproxy of the University of Passau is 188.8.131.52.
External access is active in the browser window in which the login took place and in further tabs newly opened from this parent window. In other browser windows, you are using the IP address assigned by the internet provider.
How can I log out?
Simply close the browser window or click on Logout. If you do not log out, the session will end automatically after two hours.
What are the requirements for a browser to be able to use external access?
Do you have a password problem?
Has your password expired? Can you register for Stud.IP, for example? About your ZIM username and password
Do you have a firewall problem?
The message 'This page cannot be displayed' indicates a firewall problem. Company networks in particular may have firewalls preventing access to external servers such as the EZProxy server of the University of Passau. You must allow access to 'docweb.rz.uni-passau.de' (or 184.108.40.206); ports 2048 and above. If necessary, contact the system administrator of your local network.
I don't have full-text access, although I should have
You may be accessing a Database/Journal/E-Book page that has not yet been set up for external access. Perhaps the provider has changed his web address. Perhaps there is only a temporary access problem.
